Chapter 9
Lord
The phone continues to ring as I wait for Dee to answer. It’s been three days since I’ve talked to my nigga and I’m checking to make sure he is alright. The voicemail picks up but I don’t bother to leave a message. I close my eyes and exhale loudly. I’d be lying if I said that the shit Cari told me wasn’t fucking with my mind. Dee has been down with me for a long ass time, but that nigga has been acting strange lately.
I didn’t really notice it too much until last night. I thought it would be a good idea to have the people that I love and trust around me so I invited my select few and treated them all to dinner. When I called Dee to give him a personal invite, he pissed me off! The nigga sounded as if he has an attitude. Then, he had every excuse in the book for why he couldn’t break bread with his brother. It went from him not feeling too good to him just flat out saying that he wasn’t in the mood. After a while I said fuck it. I wasn’t gone beg his bitch ass to spend my money.
I think that everyone still had fun. There were a few of my crew there along with my girl and my mom. We ate well and talked about all kinds of shit. It felt like I could finally relax. Shit, even Cari showed up and showed his nigga love. Dude ain’t even been down with the crew long and he’s already picking up where Dee drops the ball. It’s funny because Dee’s telling me not to trust Cari, but I’m starting to think that he’s the one I should keep an eye on.
With those thoughts running rampant in my head, I pick up my phone again and dial a number. As the line rings, I think to myself that I may be overreacting. The person answers and I begin to tell him exactly what I need him to do. After a few minutes, he guarantees me that he will get on it right away and we disconnect our call. Now that I’ve gotten the ball rolling, I can rest assured that I will have answers soon. Feeling better about the situation, I dial my mom and wait for her to answer.
“Hello, baby,” she answers sweetly when our call is connected.
“Hey, Ma. What are you doing?”
“Nothing, just peeling these chitterlings for my Sunday dinner. What are you doing?” she asks.
“I’m not doing anything, Ma, just about to leave out to get my car washed.”
“You are always washing that dang car, boy,” she laughs.
“I know. I have to keep my baby clean,” I tell her referring to my supercharged smoke grey Range Rover.
“Will you be over for dinner Sunday?”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
“Ok, well, baby, let me get back to what I’m doing. I’ll talk to you later.”
“That’ll work, momma. I love you.”
“I love you too, Clifford,” she says before hanging up.
